Manchester United have now moved ahead of Liverpool in the race for an “unstoppable” forward, following a surprise twist.
Man Utd eyeing new forward amid Zirkzee uncertainty
Joshua Zirkzee is attracting widespread interest ahead of the January transfer window, with West Ham United being named as potential suitors, alongside Leeds United, AS Roma and AC Milan.
However, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Man United are hesitant to sanction an early departure, given the lack of depth in attacking areas, saying: “Man United don’t want Zirkzee to leave at the beginning of January because they are short of options with Amad [Diallo] and [Bryan] Mbeumo at AFCON, Bruno [Fernandes] now injured, [Kobbie] Mainoo at the moment still not available.”
That implies United could let the Dutchman leave late in the window, should they manage to bring in a replacement, and AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo has emerged as a target, following the Ghanaian’s fantastic start to the Premier League season.
There has been a new update on the Red Devils’ pursuit of Semenyo, with a report from TEAMtalk revealing they have now moved ahead of Liverpool in the race for his signature, despite Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol claiming on Monday Semenyo will “go to Liverpool”.
Indeed, despite holding talks over a deal for the Bournemouth star, the Reds don’t plan to make a move in the January transfer window, which has boosted United’s chances of winning the race for his signature, although Manchester City could provide stiff competition.
Jason Wilcox is a long-term admirer of the 25-year-old, who is set to be available for £65m next month, and following the latest surprise twist, United are confident they will be able to get a deal over the line.
"Unstoppable" Semenyo among the goals again in Burnley draw
The Ghana international brought a seven-game goal drought in the Premier League to an end in the Cherries’ 4-4 draw at Old Trafford, and he once again caught the eye against Burnley at the weekend, scoring his side’s only goal as the spoils were shared.
That strike took the winger to a tally of eight for the season in the Premier League, while he has also provided three assists, showcasing that he could now be ready to make the step up to one of England’s biggest clubs.

It is clear to see why Wilcox is a fan of the former Bristol City man, and he is not alone in his admiration, with Darren Bent describing him as “unstoppable”.

Should Man City trigger Semenyo’s release clause, it could be difficult for United to compete, given that Pep Guardiola’s side are fighting for the Premier League title, but it is promising news that Liverpool appear to have dropped out of the race.
